                   As you are aware, the general elections scheduled for February 18, 2008 mark the heralding of a new era in the history of Pakistan as these are being held after the previous assemblies completed their full term for the first time in the history of the country.

                   On this historic occasion, Press Information Department, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of Pakistan has the honour to present this “Media Guide” to you. 

                   May I take this opportunity to inform you that the contents of this booklet contain useful information required by a media practitioner in the efficient discharge of professional responsibilities.   2. The Four provinces are autonomous in their respective areas to legislate their own laws in accordance with the powers enshrined in the 1973 Constitution Assembly. They have their own Legislative Assemblies which are also elected on the basis of adult franchise.

The Senate is a permanent legislative body and symbolizes a process of continuity in the national affairs. It consists of 100 members.  The four Provincial Assemblies, Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Federal Capital form its electoral college.

Pakistan National Flag

:

Dark green with a white vertical bar, a white crescent and a five-pronged star in the middle. The Flag symbolizes Pakistan’s profound commitment to Islam, the Islamic world and the rights of religious minorities.

National Anthem

:

Approved in August, 1954.

State Emblem

:

The State Emblem consists of:

1. The crescent and star, which are symbols of        Islam;

2. The shield shows four major crops;

3. Wreath represents cultural heritage; and

4. Scroll contains the Quaid’s motto: Unity, Faith and, Discipline.
