PRESS RELEASE
Islamabad
: 8th November, 2010
Message from Mr. Asif Ali Zardari
President of the Islamic
Republic of Pakistan
On the occasion of 133rd Birth Anniversary of
Allama Iqbal (
9th November, 2010).

Poet, sage and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal will always be remembered for envisioning a separate homeland for the Muslims of the Sub Continent on the one hand and for his remarkable contributions to understanding the true message of our religion.

On the eve of his 133rd birthday when the country he envisioned is faced with multifaceted challenges and the spirit of Islam and its message distorted by religious extremists and zealots the need for reverting to Iqbal’s teachings and philosophy was never as great as it is today.

Pakistan continues to be challenged and Islam continues to be ruthlessly exploited by extremists and militants to foist their narrow political agendas on the people. Let us therefore pledge on the birthday of our poet philosopher to protect the country he envisioned and also rescue our great religion from those who reject the Constitution and the modern institutions of democracy in the very name of religion. When some misguided people take up arms for what they call holy war against any one who disagrees with them they do a lasting disservice to the religion and its teachings. Let us on this day reaffirm our resolve that we will not allow them to tarnish the image of our religion.

Allama Iqbal also believed that religion was a living and dynamic force that needed to be continuously interpreted as modern thought advanced. He believed that as knowledge advances other views are not only possible but may indeed be sounder.

Let us imbibe the teachings of Allama Iqbal and not be afraid of critically re-examining our views in the light of alternate views. This indeed is the best tribute we can pay to Allama Iqbal today.

MESSAGE OF SYED YUSUF RAZA GILANI

PRIME MINISTER OF
PAKISTAN
ON ALLAMA IQBAL’S BIRTHDAY
(
9TH NOVEMBER, 2010)

It is with a deep sense of pride and profound feelings of gratitude that we are celebrating the 133rd birth anniversary of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the poet, sage and philosopher of all times. Given the unique nature of challenges facing the humanity in general and the Muslim Umma in particular, the relevance of Dr Iqbal’s message and thought has increased manifold.

To Allama Iqbal, we owe not only a poetry that stirs our soul and a philosophy that serves as a clarion call for a dynamic life, but also a national home that he visualized for us and gave it a conceptual form. Allama Iqbal awakened in us the desire to seek our identity and our entity as Muslims and urged the Muslims of the sub-continent to turn to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah to lead them in their struggle for freedom.

We are celebrating the birth anniversary of Allama Iqbal at a critical juncture of our national history. The Poet of the East was the harbinger of hope. He taught the lesson of not submitting before the challenges and urged the Muslims to find creative solutions to their problems by depending upon their inherent strengths. Allama Iqbal’s life-long mission was to create in the Muslims an impelling awareness of the need for synergizing efforts and energies for the overall welfare of humanity. The thought of Iqbal was instrumental in marshalling the multitudes of Muslims into a well-knit nation. In his call he has stressed that the pre-requisites for Islamic renaissance are self-gnosis and discipline, which he defines as unquestioning obedience to the will of ALLAH and action, which he interprets as steadfast endeavour to follow the injunctions of the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The scourges of terrorism and extremism that afflict our body politic can be eliminated by preaching Allama Iqbal’s message and forging unity in our ranks.

The policies in Pakistan have been set in the direction of Allama Iqbal’s vision The government of Pakistan is committed to mould our political, social and economic systems in accordance with the vision of Allama Iqbal. Iqbal’s thought can help us fix and achieve our national goals through awakening our collective ego. Allama Iqbal believed in the dignity and brotherhood of man as a basis to establish peace and global order. Indeed, the best tribute we can pay to his memory is to ensure that we do not allow any vested interest to deflect us from this course.

Let us pledge to translate his universal message of love, peace and harmony into a living reality by applying it in particular way to the affairs of our own country.

GHURKI'S VISIT TO
BEIJING:  STRATEGIC TALKS ON CHILD RIGHTS
Islamabad: 8th November, 2010

Mrs. Samina Khalid Ghurki, Federal Minister for Social Welfare & Special Education participates in Strategic Talks on Child Rights, Held in Beijing, China. Senior Government officials and Ministers from twenty- eight countries from across Asia and the Pacific gathered for the High Level Meeting (HLM)  to seek improved collaboration for Child Rights. The Meeting was hosted by the All China Women's Federation, the National Working Committee for Children and Women under the State Council, the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China with support from the UNICEF. The participating countries represented one billion children, or 53% of the world's total population.

The HLM focused their discussion around three key themes: namely achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with equity: enhancing children's lives through improved disaster risk reduction; and child protection and welfare. The three themes were selected as issues of growing significance and common concern for countries across the Asia Pacific region. Children in the Asia-Pacific region continue to face serious protection challenges, varying by country, but including sex selection, early marriage, violence and abuse, and trafficking. Addressing, and preventing these problems requires a comprehensive and effective child protection and child welfare system.

Economic progress in many Asia-Pacific countries has been remarkable, with hundreds of millions of people emerging from dollar-a-day poverty over the past few decades. Yet, at the same time, economic and social inequalities have been increasing, affecting the lives of millions of children. To help address these disparities, officials from across the region had in-depth discussions on the promotion of child rights to health, education and protection.

Through greater cooperation considerable gains can also be made in child-centered disaster reduction strategies. As recent floods in Pakistan and China have reminded us, the Asia-Pacific region is extremely vulnerable to disasters, including those related to climate change. It is children who suffer the most.

"The Government of Pakistan is fully committed to improving the situation of children in Pakistan through cooperation with other nations across
Asia and implementing the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child through National policies and legislation," said Mrs. Samina Khalid Ghurki, Federal Minister of Social Welfare and Special Education. "Pakistan is committed to improving the situation of child rights through a range of programs and projects that enhance child's access to education, health facilities and to protect them from abuse , neglect, discrimination, violence and exploitation." She was heading a Four-member delegation to the HLM.

The meeting looked at how countries could work together more effectively for the benefit of all children and provide opportunities to strengthen cooperation. The HLM adopted Beijing Declaration to ensure Co-operation on Child Rights in the Asia-Pacific Region.
