Photo Exhibition of Pakistani Photographer to Open in
Berlin

A photo exhibition, “Through My Eyes – Soul of Pakistan” will open at Art Hall, Kunstklinikum in Berlin on Tuesday, October 11, 2011. About 50 photographs shot in Karachi by a Pakistani photographer, Hameed Moinuddin are being put on display during the weeklong exhibition. A Berlin-based author and photographer, Maria Dost has written poetic text of these pictures in German and English. In her texts she expresses her feelings and thoughts while looking at the photographs and in this way a dialogue Berlin – Karachi is created. All the pictures are shot in Karachi and show day-to-day life of ordinary citizens, says a press release received here today from Berlin.

The exhibition has been organized by German-Pak Council for Culture and Democracy.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Germany Shahid Kamal will inaugurate the exhibition.

Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan leaves for Turkey on five day official visit

“Pakistan & Turkey enjoy warm and cordial relations based on common faith, shared traditions and mutual goodwill”, said Federal Minister for Information and & Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan in a statement today before leaving for Turkey on a 5 day official visit. She said that both countries not only maintain cultural, commercial, and strategic cooperation but have geopolitical understandings as well.

Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan reiterated that regular exchange of high level visits between the two countries is a reflection of our close brotherly ties. She said that Pakistan values highly its relations with the brethren Muslim country and would welcome Turkish investment in energy, social sector, infrastructure, agriculture, rail & road network connectivity and particularly in the field of media.

Information Minister emphasized on the need to enhance cooperation in media sector so that both countries could learn from each other’s best practices and experiences. She added that mutual cooperation in the field of media should be further enhanced for mutual benefit of both the countries. She also lauded the help provided by Turkey to provide relief to the victims of earthquake and flood in Pakistan and expressed her gratitude to the Turkish government.

During her official visit, the Minister will offer condolences with the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on the sad demise of his mother.  She will also meet with Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Bulent Anince and other Ministers. She is also scheduled to meet with senior news editors and Bureau Chiefs including various media groups like Zaman and Hurriat groups of media.

Beside above, she would also participate in Fund Raising telethon for flood affectees of Sindh on Samanvolu TV and attend a Fund Raising dinner hosted by kimse yok mu solidarity, a local charity organization. Moreover, she will visit Faith University to meet with the Rector and to address the faculty and students.

The visit is significant in a sense that MOUs will be signed between state news agencies and televisions, APP and Anadalou News agencies, TRT and PTV. It will not only boost cooperation between the two countries in the field of Media but also devise programmes to exchange news, dramas and other technical cooperation between state televisions.

Economic Development Links with Protection of Intellectual Property Rights  …… Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi

The Chairman Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan Mr. Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi has said that healthy environment is need of time for economic development that links with protection of intellectual property rights in the country. We as a country need to promote respective attitude towards IP rights of each other. He expressed these views while taking to a group of a local University Students, who called on him in his office.

He said that basic objective of economic growth in any country is to improve the standard of living of its common man. Government of Pakistan is committed to generate economic activities in all sectors. However, there is need to promote trust level in all sectors, which can only be possible to protect intellectual property rights.

The Chairman pointed out that our economy is passing through different crisis and ignorance of IP rights is one of the important issue. Piracy and Counterfeiting trend was not critically analyzed due to which substandard goods have taken place in the market.

He mentioned that new concept of IP based nation is gaining ground because Intellectual Property Management is significant to provide better opportunities of investment. Chairman IPO declared that we are loosing revenue due to non-protection of Intellectual Property Rights in the country. Comprehensive strategy is being initiated to aware all segments of the society about Intellectual Property Rights by involving related stakeholders, he told. He hoped that through better understanding about IP rights, a healthy and more valuable creation in all sectors would be made and we would be able to promote our economy on the path of fast track in comity of nations.  

Students lauded the important role of IPO-Pakistan and shared some suggestions to improvement. They assured all possible cooperation in this sector.

Turkish member of board and owner of Dada pvt sons meet with Federal minister Riaz Pirzada
Agreements of cotton trade are being signed with Turkey

Today a Turkish member of Board Agaglu and owner of Dada Private Sons and Star Cotton Private Atif Saeed Dada meet today with Federal Minister for Professional & Technical Training, Riaz Pirzada to sign agreements of exporting cotton to Turkey. Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan urged the desire to settle their trade agreements with Pakistan Government after trade break up with Israel. Today in the meeting it was decided that in first step feasibility and capacity of Pakistan to export their cotton will be checked and from upcoming year cotton will be exported to turkey. It is hoped that upto 5 million bails of cotton will be export to turkey. Owner of Dada private sons, Mr. Atif Saeed Dada told that Pakistan itself is a rich consumer of cotton but we will prefer Turkey to export of our surplus cotton over other neighboring states. Federal Minister Riaz Pirzada told that it is very good news for the cotton land holders and farmers as with this agreement, in the upcoming months the price of cotton will hike and they will earn sound benefits. Federal Minister Riaz Pirzada further said that after china, our trade with Turkey will open new avenues for traders and it will help Pakistan to stabilize its economy. Former Minister for Textile and member of National Assembly Rana Farooq Saeed Khan also attended the meeting.

SUPARCO To Open Regional Branch in Quetta

The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) celebrated space week in collaboration with Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences (BUITMS) at BUITMS campus in Quetta. Vice-chancellor BUITMS Eng. Ahmed Farooq Bazai stated that the age we are living in is the space age and we have to prepare our youth for greater challenges ahead so that we may compete with other nations and the time is to expose the inner and outer atmosphere as what is happening to us as a nation he further added that we as an organization try to introduce space technology in Pakistan. Pro-vice Chancellor M.A.K Malghani stated that the celebration of space week is the beginning and our collaboration with SUPARCO will continue. He emphasized that we need to develop our educational institutions through which nations develops. Member SUPARCO Imran Iqbal said that he was very please to inform the people of Bolachistan that SUPARCO is determined to open its regional establishment in Balochistan with collaboration with BUITMS. Imran Iqbal maintained that the opening of new branches of SUPARCO will create new jobs and opportunities for understanding space technology. Mr. Aziz Ahmad Bilour, Federal Secretary Ministry of Industries (MoI) has said that the Government of Pakistan will collaborate with the Brazilian Government for transfer of knowledge and technology to enhance quality and productivity of ethanol. He made these remarks while holding a meeting with a Brazilian delegation which comprised Mr. Bruno de Amorim Maciel, project analyst (Brazilian Cooperation Agency-ABC), Mr. Gabriel Alves Maciel, (Expert on Genetic Enhancement), Mr. Vanildo Alberto Leal Bezerra Cavalcanti, (Expert on Phytopathology) and Mr. Minucio Monteiro Filho, (Expert on Technical Assistance and Rural Extension).

Mr. Bilour apprised the experts about the status of ethanol distilleries in Pakistan and said that there is an urgent need to improve the efficiency of ethanol producing units in Pakistan as the products produced here is not of premium quality. He informed the delegation that there are 19 ethanol refineries in Pakistan which produce about half a million ton of ethanol, 50% of which is the non-fuel ethanol. He said that the Government of Pakistan initiated E- 10 Scheme in which 10% of ethanol was to be blended with the traditional fuel for usage in vehicles but this did not prove successful as ethanol left deposits damaging parts of engine and reducing efficiency. He said that the MoI is interested in getting technical assistance form Brazilian experts in the up gradation of existing distilleries, pre-treatment of sugarcane molasses so that it can be preserved for a longer time and use of ethanol as a fuel in power stations. Mr. Bilour also floated the idea to explore opportunities to offer short duration technical training and fellowships in the Brazilian Ethanol Training Institutes for our technicians and scholars in the Ethanol industry.

Representing the delegation Mr. Bruno said that there is a great potential for cooperation between the two countries in the fields of ethanol production, renewable energy, hybrid seed production, off-season vegetable production, bio fuel, resource conservation and pests control technology. He said that Brazil have an advanced ethanol producing technology and is using 100% ethanol in the vehicles since last 20 years. Pakistan can greatly benefit from the Brazilian experience and expertise as it has plenty of raw material required for this purpose, he added. Mr. Minucio assured Mr. Bilour that his Government will look into the proposal for providing scholarships to Pakistani engineers and technicians in ethanol technology as this would prove a swift mode for transfer of technology and knowledge.

The MoI also proposed Brazilian cooperation with the local automotive industry for manufacturing of Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV) using hydrous alcohol. Similarly, it was suggested by the Ministry to have joint ventures with Brazilian companies for developing and marketing other products of ethanol in Pakistan and in the international market. Feasibility for diversification of ethanol use in the manufacture of Alco-chemicals and other sectors aside from transportation was also sought.

A meeting of the PPP senior leadership was held in the Presidency Monday afternoon presided over by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusaf Raza Gilani.

Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar said that the meeting took stock of the overall political situation obtaining in the country with emphasis on the availability of Power, economic situation, the law and order situation and relations with coalition partners.

Syed Naveed Qamar, Federal Minister for Water & Power, briefed the meeting on the supply and demand situation of power in the country and the steps underway to meet the energy challenge. Naveed Qamar said that the remedial measures adopted had eased off the power crises by increasing the generation by 4500 MW which had reduced outages. He said that in the long term measures the foundation stone of the country’s biggest 4500 MW hydro Power project- the Bhasha Project would be laid early next week.

The Prime Minister gave a briefing on the economic situation and relations with coalition partners.

Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Federal Minister for Commerce briefed the meeting on his recent visit to India and the Indian government’s agreement to waive its objections against the EU’s proposed trade concessions to Pakistan.

The President briefed the meeting on the deliberations held on Saturday in a meeting attended by Governor, Chief Minister Sindh and others in the Presidency on the steps being taken by the provincial government of Sindh to implement the Supreme Court verdict in the Suo Moto case about the Karachi situation.

  Farhatullah Babar said that the President emphasized the need to solve the energy problems on a permanent basis saying that the power situation in the country must be improved and not allowed to degenerate into an issue of power politics.

The situation in Balochistan also came under discussion, the spokesperson said.

Fourth Video Conference in the Presidency to monitor flood relief activities
Islamabad; October 10, 2011.

President Asif Ali Zardari today visited and interacted with the elected representatives as well as concerned government officials of the flood affected areas of Sindh and monitored the flood relief activities in these districts through satellite video conferencing from the special Flood Control Cell of Aiwan-e-Sadr.

Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar said that under directions of the President the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and relevant provincial ministers including MQM provincial ministers were encamped in Mirpurkhas to discuss issues about Mirpurkhas division comprising of Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Sangarh and Umerkot via video conferencing.

The spokesperson said that during  today’s video conference, the President directed Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, public representatives of the flood affected areas and all concerned officials to expedite relief work and step up efforts so that all those left without shelters in the flood affected areas get shelters before the fast approaching winter season.

Those who were present during today’s video conferencing included among others Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National assembly, Syed Naveed Qamar, Minister for Water & Power, Secretary General to the President Mr. M. The Spokesperson said that during briefing on Mirpurkhas district, the President was informed that over thirty one thousand tents, over 3 lacs Family Packs, twenty three thousand blankets, nearly eight hundred water purification units, three de-watering pumps, over sixteen thousand mosquito nets have been distributed in Mirpurkhas alone along with other supplies including drinking water, medicines and food items for over 7 lacs flood affectees in the district.

  In Sangher, over thirty five thousand tents, two hundred forty one thousand Family Packs, six de-watering pumps, four thousand mosquito’s nets  and other food items and commodities have been provided for over 1 million flood and rain affectees in Sanghar, the meeting was informed.

The concerned DCOs informed the President about health facilities and availability of medicines in these districts along with other steps taken in light of the President’s earlier directives to prevent outbreak of various diseases particularly dengue fever and Hepatitis.

The President also inquired about need assessment and supply position of various commodities in the affected areas of Sindh.

The Spokesperson said that on a point raised by the Speaker National Assembly Ms. Fehmid Mirza about the stagnant water in Badin, the President directed that a special team of experts of WAPDA should visit Badin immediately and propose a drainage plan on a permanent basis.

Fehmida Mirza had pointed that most of the floodwater drained out from other areas had stagnated in Badin and urged that special plans needed for drainage in Badin.

The Chief Minster informed that, in line with the President’s directives, he along with the concerned cabinet members are visiting and monitoring relief activities in all the affected districts of Sindh and addressing the problems of the affected people on priority basis.  He also said that he would continue to visit flood affected areas physically and through video conferencing to step up relief activities.

The President said that the flood havoc may be a regular feature due to climatic change and called for making long term plans to meet such eventualities in the future as well. He called for a study to be carried out to examine feasibility of diverting floodwaters to the natural catchment areas in deserts for use in the future and for irrigating parched and dry land in interior Sindh.

The Spokesperson said that the President also directed that all procurements for the flood areas be placed on the web for transparency and accountability. He said that a proper inventory of goods be prepared for each district and Taluka and the record of the stores and machinery be properly catalogued and tabulated to check misuse and pilferage.

The President also enquired about the progress made in the distribution of Pakistan Cards among flood victims and called for stepping up the process, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that the MQM provincial ministers present with the Chief Minister at Mirpurkhas appreciated the President’s concern and monitoring the flood situation through satellite video conferencing.
